How AI Search Optimisation (AEO) Works: A Practical Guide to Getting Cited by AI

Ask ChatGPT which accounting firm in Dubai handles VAT registration for start-ups, and you get a short list of names. There are no ten blue links and no page two. Either your business is in that answer, or it isn’t, and the person asking rarely looks any further.
This is the problem AI search optimisation, also called answer engine optimisation (AEO), sets out to solve. Traditional SEO earns a position on a results page. AEO earns a place inside the answer itself, as a cited source or a named recommendation.
What Actually Happens When Someone Asks an AI a Question?
Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot all use some form of retrieval-augmented generation. Rather than relying only on training data, the large language model (LLM) fetches live content and writes its answer from what it finds. In simplified terms, the process looks like this:
- Query fan-out: one question becomes several. “Best CRM for a small real estate agency” may be split into sub-queries on pricing, integrations, local support, and reviews.
- Retrieval: each sub-query pulls candidate pages from a search index.
- Passage selection: the model lifts the specific paragraphs, list items, or table rows that answer each sub-query best, not whole pages.
- Synthesis and citation: those passages are combined into a single response, with links to some of the sources used.
Two consequences follow. A page can rank well for a head term and still be passed over if no single passage answers the question cleanly. Equally, a page can be cited for a sub-query it never targeted, simply because one paragraph handled it better than any competitor’s did.
The Signals That Decide Which Sources Get Cited
No AI platform publishes a ranking factor list for its answers. Testing across platforms does, however, reveal consistent patterns in which sources get picked.
Answers That Stand on Their Own
A paragraph that opens with “As mentioned above, this varies” is close to useless to a model that has extracted only that paragraph. Cited pages tend to give the answer first and qualify it afterward: a definition in the opening sentence, a figure with its unit and date, a step that names the tool it refers to.
Entity Consistency
AI systems reason in entities: organisations, people, products, places and the relationships between them. When your brand name, services, location and leadership are described the same way on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and industry directories, models can connect those references with confidence. Three versions of your address undermine that, which is why local SEO groundwork feeds directly into AI visibility.
Third-Party Corroboration
A claim that appears only on your own site carries little weight. The same claim in a trade publication, a comparison article, a forum thread, and a handful of customer reviews is far more likely to surface. Brand mentions matter here even without a link, because language models read text rather than relying on link graphs alone.
Experience and Freshness
Google’s E-E-A-T principles (experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness) still shape which pages its AI features draw from. Named authors with relevant credentials, first-hand detail, original data, and properly cited sources all strengthen a page. For pricing, regulation, and product comparisons, recently updated content is favoured; a 2023 guide to UAE corporate tax will struggle against one revised this year.
Technical Foundations That Often Get Overlooked
Content that AI crawlers can’t reach or parse won’t be cited, however good it is. A few checks are worth running:
- Crawler access: confirm that robots.txt, firewall, and CDN rules aren’t blocking bots such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Bingbot.
- Rendering: some AI crawlers handle JavaScript poorly, so core copy should be present in the server-rendered HTML.
- Schema markup: Organisation, LocalBusiness, Article, Product and FAQ structured data removes ambiguity about what a page is and who stands behind it.
- Semantic structure: descriptive headings, genuine lists and tables, and one clear topic per page all make passage extraction easier.
Much of this is standard technical SEO, which is why a site that is not ranking on Google usually performs poorly in AI search as well.
Measuring AI Search Visibility
There is no Search Console equivalent for AI-generated answers yet, so measurement relies on a combination of methods:
- Tracking a fixed set of buyer-style prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews each month
- Comparing citation share against named competitors for those prompts
- Segmenting GA4 referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar sources
- Monitoring branded search volume, since people often search for a business by name after an AI recommends it
AI answers fluctuate from one day to the next, so judge progress over several weeks rather than individual checks.
Where AEO Sits Alongside Traditional SEO
AI Overviews draw largely from pages that already rank in Google, and other AI search tools lean on established indexes too. Strong organic rankings, built through proven SEO services, remain the foundation. What AEO adds is closer attention to how content is broken apart, quoted, and attributed, along with deliberate work on the off-site signals that make a brand safe for a model to name.
How Convertly Helps Your Brand Appear in AI Answers
We approach AI visibility as part of search rather than a separate channel. Our AI search optimisation service begins with an AI perception audit. During it, we put the questions your customers genuinely ask to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and record what comes back, including which competitors get named instead of you. We then tighten your entity data, restructure priority pages so their answers can be lifted cleanly, and fix the crawl and schema issues holding them back.
Off-site, our backlink services and digital PR build the third-party mentions AI models depend on, while our content writing team fills the topic gaps the audit uncovers. To see how your brand shows up in AI answers today, book a free SEO audit or get in touch with our Dubai team.
